Pixelache Festival at Kiasma – Perception Through the Other!
Kiasma Seminar room will host two participatory works exploring embodied perception and experimental interaction.
Channel Surfers participatory virtual reality work invites visitors on a playful collaborative journey to dissolves interpersonal boundaries. You travel by wearing the Channel Surfers headsets, which is equipped with a small television screen and a video camera. The television screens picks up live video transmissions from different cameras and Arduino controllers enable continuous and dynamic altering of which camera is sending video to which TV screen. For instance, a participant will one moment be seeing through the camera they themselves are wearing, but then instantly be switched to seeing from the perspective of any other participant.
Participants will be guided together through participating in a variety of playful activities. These activities will be carefully chosen based upon our experimentation with different dynamic configurations of camera viewpoints to provide different sensations of I, We, You, and They. This selection will be adapted to local conditions but for instance may include parachute games, tug of war and classic games and activities from community theatre.
The Channel Surfers collective met through their involvement in the studio based IT Product Design masters programme at the University of Southern Denmark in Kolding. . This international MSc course is part of the interdisciplinary design initiative SDU Design that brings together experts from design, engineering, social sciences, humanities and theatre.
Tazebao Hybrid Ecosystem is an application or a recreational tool for social interaction that preserves the anonymity of its users. This experimental social software enables meeting and various activities of people using their geographical locations, while seemingly intriguing the users in a hide and seek game. The application is available for free during the Pixelache Festival, and is light, fast and easy to use, and simple to de-install without leaving any trace on your device.
Tazeao is created by [epidemiC], who are an informal group of multidisciplinary collaborators observing and exploring the phenomena caused by the intrusion of digital information networks in so-called traditional culture.
Pixelache Festival 2016 examines the possibilities of a shift towards the understanding of human species as a balanced part of the ecosystem we live within. We propose that one of keys to this shift is empathy. Thus, we are asking is it possible, through this very basic ability to sense and identify, to change the narrative of the human-kind? The festival wants to propose that maybe empathy could be learned, found or especially re-found through eg. bodily presence, experimental communication and embodied and alternate visions of perception.
Pixelache Festival 2016 ‘Interfaces for Empathy’ brings together multiple works, events and activities that challenge the participant’s perception and explore the festival theme of enhancing empathy in playful, participatory and unexpected ways.
Pixelache Festival 2016 venues are Lapinlahti old Hospital area, Kiasma Seminar room, MUU Gallery in Kaapeli and Helsinki City Winter Garden.
